Around 1830 American pioneer William Nelson traveled to Guatemala and arrived at the side of a hillock that the local Mayan Indians called "Pecul," near the small village of San Francisco Zapotitlan. The luxuriant and pristine vegetation of "Pecul" has provided shelter to the exotic quetzal, Guatemala's national bird. Besides the amazing scenery, Nelson found optimal natural conditions to grow coffee and established the coffee plantation named "Las Nubes" meaning The Clouds.”

About the Plantation: Las Nubes has a focus for the well-being of all individuals working in the community. The farm management provides medical assistance, schooling, housing, and other important services. A teacher who is specially trained teaches the children from first to sixth grade during the morning and from 7th to 9th grade during the afternoon using the method “Tele Secundaria”. Around 3,000 people annually benefit from the health programs of Finca Las Nubes.
